Vilhelm Hammershoi (1864-1919) misunderstood and under-appreciated during his lifetime is now recognized as one of the most celebrated Danish artists of the 19th/20th Century. The show is intimate, twenty-five carefully selected paintings (from The National Gallery of Denmark) focusing on his four main genres: landscapes, desolate city-scapes, portraits, and spare interiors. It is his "interior"paintings which move me the most; having a haunting, meditative quality, especially when occupied by a lone woman. His style and feel is reminiscent of a combination of Hopper and Vermeer.
